Poland's environmental protection coin series of the early 1980s was produced under the Polish People's Republic at a moment of acute political instability — Solidarity had just emerged as a mass movement and martial law would follow in December 1981. Trial strikes from this series, designated as pattern issues by the major references, were produced in limited numbers for submission approval and archival purposes rather than general release. The Fischer catalog distinguishes at least two pattern variants for this type, suggesting the design or alloy specification went through more than one round of official review before the circulation strike was approved.
