The World Wildlife Fund's 15th anniversary in 1976 prompted a wave of commemorative issues from member and affiliated nations, and Zaïre was among those that issued gold pieces tied to the occasion. The WWF had maintained a relationship with African governments partly through conservation agreements covering the Congo Basin's biodiversity corridors — lending these issues a thin veneer of political relevance beyond pure bullion commemoration.
Fr#1 in the Friedberg gold reference confirms this as the first — and effectively only — gold type in the Zaïre series at this specification.
