Zheng Chenggong — known in the West as Koxinga — expelled the Dutch East India Company from Taiwan in 1662 after a nine-month siege of Fort Zeelandia, ending nearly four decades of Dutch colonial administration on the island. Beijing's decision to issue a large-format silver commemorative in his honor in 1995 was not historically neutral: the timing coincided with escalating cross-strait tensions, and celebrating the man who "recovered" Taiwan carried unmistakable political freight.
The 373-gram format places this among the heavier single-coin issues in the PRC commemorative program of the period. Mintages for these oversized silver pieces were tightly controlled.
