The 2011 Xi'an International Horticultural Exposition ran from April through October across a 418-hectare site on the Chan and Ba rivers, drawing over 15 million visitors — the largest horticultural exposition China had hosted to that point. Xi'an's selection as host city was partly a political calculation, designed to direct international attention toward China's interior provinces rather than the coastal megalopolises that typically dominate foreign perception of the country.
Gold commemoratives tied to the exposition were issued in multiple denominations; this 7.77g piece corresponds to the half-ounce tier of the series.
