The "without YUAN" designation refers to a specific printing variant of the fifth series 100 Yuan note in which the pinyin romanization "YUAN" was omitted from the face. This is not a post-issue alteration — it reflects an early production state before the typography was standardized across the full print run. The variant is catalogued separately (Pick 901 versus the standard Pick 901a) precisely because it predates the correction.
Fifth series notes were the first Chinese issues to incorporate optically variable ink on the numeral denomination, a counterfeit deterrent adopted in direct response to sophisticated forgeries that had plagued the fourth series through the 1990s.
