China's platinum bullion program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was never a commercial priority for the People's Bank — mintages were kept extremely low and distribution outside domestic channels was inconsistent. The 1992 seismograph issue is among the scarcer dates in the series, with reported production figures well under 1,000 pieces.
The instrument honored on this coin was invented by Zhang Heng in 132 AD during the Eastern Han dynasty — the world's first seismoscope, capable of detecting distant earthquakes before any messenger could arrive on horseback.
