China's palladium Panda series had one of the shortest runs of any modern bullion program — issued sporadically from 1989 through the mid-2000s before being quietly discontinued. The 2005 issue came near the end of that window, at a moment when palladium prices had collapsed from their extraordinary 2001 peak of over $1,000 per troy ounce, driven down after Ford and other automakers aggressively reduced their catalytic converter stockpiles. Low spot prices made palladium coins a commercial dead end, and mintages for late-series issues reflect that reality.
