| Beschrijving keerzijde | A young giant panda is depicted playfully hanging from a bamboo branch in the central field, its body rendered in high sculptural relief with fine fur detailing against a finely granulated background. Lush bamboo foliage frames the composition on both sides. The denomination 100元 appears in the upper left field, while the inscription 含纯金1盎司 成色.999 (containing 1 troy ounce of pure gold, fineness .999) is inscribed along the lower right, with the additional notation 1oz Au. The reverse exemplifies the annually changing panda design tradition for which this series is renowned. |

The Panda gold series launched in 1982 at the initiative of the People's Bank of China partly as a foreign exchange earner during the early reform period under Deng Xiaoping. By 1985 the series had established enough collector momentum in Western markets — particularly the United States — that demand was outpacing initial production estimates.
The 1985 issue is the last in the series to carry a fixed panda design before the annual design rotation became a deliberate and permanent policy, a distinction that sharpened retrospective collector interest in the earlier dates considerably.
