Mencius was issued as part of China's ongoing "Sages of Ancient China" bullion series, which the People's Bank launched in the 1980s to attract foreign hard-currency buyers at a moment when the country was still building its international numismatic market. The series leaned heavily on Confucian philosophical tradition — deliberate state positioning at a time when the government was carefully rehabilitating classical Chinese culture after decades of Cultural Revolution suppression.
