| Obverse description | Central field depicts a detailed view of the Jiayuguan Fort gatehouse, a three-tiered traditional Chinese pavilion rising above a massive fortified wall with a vaulted archway at its base, rendered in fine relief. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) curves along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 1983 appears to the right of the tower in the mid-field. Below the fort, in the lower exergue, the inscription 嘉峪关 identifies the depicted monument. |
