Additional information

This piece belongs to a short commemorative series issued in the years immediately following Deng Xiaoping's Southern Tour of 1992, a moment when the Party was aggressively rehabilitating Mao's image to stabilize ideological legitimacy while simultaneously accelerating market reforms — a contradiction that made state-sanctioned Mao imagery politically loaded and commercially lucrative at once. China Gold Coin Corporation targeted both domestic collectors and an overseas Chinese market hungry for official Mao material in the post-Tiananmen climate.

KM#534 was struck in limited quantities and distributed primarily through state banking channels rather than open philatelic networks.
