The International Year of Peace was declared by the United Nations General Assembly for 1986, and China's participation in the commemorative coinage program reflected its broader push during the mid-1980s to integrate with international institutions following decades of isolation. Beijing had only joined the UN in 1971, replacing the Republic of China on Taiwan, and issues like this one were partly diplomatic signals as much as numismatic products.
Struck at a moment when China's gold commemorative program was still in its early years, with the Shenzhen and other mints still establishing their modern proof infrastructure.
