This note belongs to a commemorative series issued by the People's Bank of China honoring the Four Beauties of ancient Chinese legend — Wang Zhaojun, Diao Chan, Xi Shi, and Yang Guifei. Wang Zhaojun's story carries genuine historical weight: a Han Dynasty court lady sent westward around 33 BCE as part of a heqin diplomatic marriage to the Xiongnu chieftain Huhanye Chanyu, she became one of the few such political marriages documented in detail in Han Shu.
The series was printed by China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation and issued in a format combining polymer-style security features with traditional paper substrate.
