Issued to mark the centennial of the 1911 Revolution — the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China — this commemorative note was released by the Central Bank alongside a broader program of centennial observances. The ROC's complicated position as a government in continuous legal existence since 1912, yet governing only Taiwan since 1949, gave the centennial a particular political charge that the note itself navigates carefully.
The Central Engraving and Printing Plant has produced ROC currency since the government relocated to Taiwan. Commemorative notes from this issuer tend to see limited genuine circulation — most were purchased directly by collectors and never spent.
