The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters around the upper periphery. The date 1987 appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description A detailed equestrian effigy of Emperor Li Shimin (Tang Taizong) is depicted in right-facing profile, the emperor rendered in traditional imperial armour astride a galloping horse, conveying a sense of martial authority and imperial dignity. A Chinese inscription identifying the subject and the Tang dynasty appears along the upper left portion of the field. The denomination 100元 is inscribed to the lower right within the field.
