| Reverse description | The central motif features a large ancient Chinese south-pointing lodestone spoon (sinan) resting upon a square diviner's board (shi), rendered in high relief and representing the earliest form of the compass. In the upper field, a two-horse chariot bearing a south-pointing figure and a cavalry procession of mounted warriors with banners are depicted in low relief, evoking the ancient military use of directional instruments. To the left, a vertical legend in Chinese identifies the invention and its approximate date. The denomination 100元 appears in the lower exergue. |
