The Bank of Kirin (Jilin) was one of several provincial banks operating in Manchuria during the chaotic transition period following Japan's surrender in August 1945. By 1946, the region was a contested zone — Nationalist and Communist forces were both moving to assert financial control, and provincial institutions like this one issued currency in part to fund local military and administrative operations before a centralized monetary authority could impose order.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the specialized Chinese provincial category. Notes from this issuer in higher denominations saw rapid depreciation and heavy circulation, making cleaner survivors genuinely uncommon.
