Issued to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic on October 1, 1949, this coin was released alongside one of the largest state ceremonial productions in modern Chinese history — a military parade in Beijing involving over 15,000 troops and 160 aircraft. The People's Bank of China issued the commemorative in a tight authorized mintage, consistent with the gold anniversary issues it has produced for major PRC milestones since the 1980s.
