The Xizang Autonomous Region was formally established on September 9, 1965, following the abolition of the traditional Tibetan government structure that had governed the plateau for centuries. Beijing's insistence on the "Xizang" nomenclature over "Tibet" in official contexts is itself a political position, and the People's Bank of China has been consistent in applying it across this commemorative series.
