The World Wildlife Fund was founded in 1961 with significant early backing from Prince Philip and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, and China's participation in its commemorative program reflects a decades-long diplomatic entanglement between the PRC and international conservation bodies — a relationship that grew complicated given China's domestic record on endangered species trafficking. The WWF's panda logo, adopted that same founding year, was itself modeled on Chi-Chi, a giant panda then resident at London Zoo.
