The Xiamen Special Economic Zone was established in 1980 as one of China's original four SEZs — the others being Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou — designated under Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening-up policy as controlled experiments in market economics. Xiamen was selected in part for its proximity to Taiwan, carrying an implicit political dimension that the other zones lacked. This 2011 commemorative marks the thirtieth anniversary of that designation.
The series was issued in both gold and silver formats. The gold piece carries a mintage of 10,000 pieces.
