The World Wildlife Fund's 25th anniversary in 1986 prompted China to issue a short series of gold commemoratives featuring endangered native fauna, the yak among them. China's participation was notable — the WWF had been one of the first major Western conservation organizations to establish formal ties with the PRC, beginning field cooperation in the early 1980s around the giant panda program. The yak series sits outside that flagship panda coinage but draws directly from the same diplomatic opening.
Mintages for the 1986 WWF gold issues were tightly restricted, and distribution ran primarily through foreign numismatic agents rather than domestic channels.
