The 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou were the largest edition of the Games to that point, with 45 nations competing across 476 events — a scale that prompted the Chinese government to authorize an unusually broad commemorative coinage program spanning multiple metals and denominations. Guangzhou's selection as host marked the first time the Games returned to China since Beijing in 1990.
