Obverse description A three-quarter front view of the E4 Series Shinkansen bullet train occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with characteristic aerodynamic nose and passenger car body visible to the right. The Kanji legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper periphery, while the denomination 百円 (One Hundred Yen) appears in two Kanji characters at the lower field. To the left of the train, the line name is inscribed in Kanji 上越 above its romanized equivalent JOETSU. The train is depicted in dynamic diagonal perspective, evoking motion along the track.
