North Korea issued a series of commemorative gold pieces through the 1990s primarily for export — hard currency generation, not domestic circulation. No ordinary citizen of the DPRK would have handled one. This piece marks the 1997 handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese sovereignty, an event Pyongyang framed as a victory of anti-colonial struggle, though the irony of a hermit state selling gold coins to foreign collectors to celebrate it was apparently unremarked upon.
