The Islamic Republic of Khotan was a short-lived separatist state that briefly controlled the oasis city of Khotan in southwestern Xinjiang in 1933, part of the broader fragmentation of Chinese authority in the region during that period. Currency was an immediate practical need, and with no access to modern printing infrastructure, local authorities issued notes printed on silk — a material historically central to Khotan's economy and one that happened to be available. The choice was functional, not ceremonial.
Silk banknotes are genuinely rare in world paper money. This note is among a tiny handful of 20th-century issues on woven cloth, and silk's dimensional instability means no two examples fold or age identically.
