Mongolia issued this piece nearly six years after the Atlanta Games closed, which places it firmly in the category of retroactive commemorative — a format the Bank of Mongolia leaned on heavily in the early 2000s to generate collector revenue rather than mark any concurrent event. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics had already produced its own substantial official U.S. commemorative program, leaving little numismatic territory unclaimed.
