Mongolia's shift to a market economy following the collapse of Soviet support in 1991 created immediate monetary instability, with inflation running above 300% annually by 1993. The tögrög required rapid redenomination of everyday transactions, and the 100-tögrög coin filled a gap left by the near-worthless lower denominations that had dominated Soviet-era circulation.
