The Zahir Mosque in Alor Setar, Malaysia, was built in 1912 under Kedah state patronage and is one of the oldest mosques in the country — an unusual subject for a Kazakhstani commemorative, and one that points to the broader pan-Islamic cultural diplomacy Kazakhstan pursued under Nazarbayev during the mid-2000s as the country positioned itself within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
