Baybars I — born somewhere in the Kipchak steppe, likely sold into slavery as a child, and eventually sultan of Egypt and Syria from 1260 to 1277 — is claimed by Kazakhstan as a national historical figure on the basis of his Kipchak Turkic origins. His military career included halting the Mongol advance at Ain Jalut in 1260, the first significant Mongol battlefield defeat, and systematically dismantling the remnant Crusader states along the Levantine coast.
Kazakhstan issued a broader series of silver commemoratives honoring Turkic historical figures during this period, of which Baybars is among the more historically substantial subjects.
