Kazakhstan's weightlifting program has historically punched well above its weight — the country claimed gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games through Halil Mutlu and dominated successive Olympic cycles before a wave of retrospective doping disqualifications stripped multiple medals following reanalysis of stored samples from Beijing 2008.
