Kazakhstan's freestyle wrestling program has been one of the country's most consistent sources of Olympic medals since independence, and this issue appeared the same year Kazakh wrestlers competed at the Vancouver and Guangzhou games. The National Bank began its Olympic sports commemorative series in the late 1990s, producing individual-sport silver issues in relatively modest mintages aimed largely at the domestic collector market rather than international distribution.
