Baitursynov — Akhmet Baitursynov — was a Kazakh poet, linguist, and political figure who developed a Latin-based alphabet for the Kazakh language in the early Soviet period, an act the Stalinist state eventually repaid with his execution in 1937. Rehabilitated posthumously, he became a cornerstone of Kazakh cultural nationalism following independence in 1991.
