Akhmet Galimbayev was a Soviet-era Kazakh painter trained in Leningrad, one of the first professionally educated fine artists from Kazakhstan, and a founding figure of what became the Union of Artists of the Kazakh SSR. His centennial fell in 2017, prompting this circulating commemorative — a category the National Bank of Kazakhstan has used aggressively since independence to assert a distinct cultural identity through coinage. Nickel silver was the standard alloy for the 100 Tenge commemorative program in this period.
