Struck to commemorate the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on 29 July 1981, this issue was one of dozens released by Commonwealth and associated nations capitalizing on the event. Samoa's participation reflected its close ties to the Crown rather than any direct royal connection to the islands.
Malietoa Tanumafili II, under whose name the coin was issued, held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — Head of State for life — a title granted uniquely to him when Western Samoa gained independence in 1962, after which the role reverted to an elected position.
