Issued the year of the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's nonstop New York–Paris flight, completed on May 21, 1927 in 33 hours and 30 minutes aboard the Spirit of St. Louis. Samoa was among dozens of small nations that issued commemorative gold in the 1970s as the international gold market opened following the U.S. abandonment of Bretton Woods — many of these pieces were struck by foreign mints on contract and saw no domestic circulation whatsoever.
