The Yamato was sunk on April 7, 1945, during Operation Ten-Go — a one-way mission with fuel enough only to reach Okinawa, never to return. She took roughly 2,498 men down with her. Samoa had no part in her construction, deployment, or loss; the coin is a bullion-adjacent commemorative produced for the collector market, issued under Samoan authority purely as a licensing and revenue mechanism common among Pacific island minting programs of that decade.
