The Padma Bridge, inaugurated June 25, 2022, was financed entirely by Bangladesh after the World Bank withdrew funding in 2012 following corruption allegations — a charge the government disputed and ultimately challenged by proceeding without any multilateral support. At roughly $3.9 billion USD, it became the most expensive infrastructure project in Bangladeshi history, funded through domestic revenue rather than foreign loans. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the decision to self-finance a deliberate point of national policy.
The commemorative issue was released the same month as the inauguration.
