Tajikistan declared independence in September 1991, though the celebration was short-lived — a civil war broke out the following year and consumed the country until 1997, killing tens of thousands and displacing roughly a tenth of the population. The 30th anniversary this coin marks was, in many respects, the first independence milestone the country could observe with genuine political stability.
