The 2002 series marked a quiet consolidation of the som's early post-independence issues — the Kyrgyz Republic had only introduced its own currency in May 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble after a protracted delay caused by IMF negotiations and neighboring states' reluctance to leave the ruble zone. By 2002, the design family had already gone through iterative revisions, and this issue updated security specifications without a full redesign.

Watermark-only security on a 2002-dated note reflects modest production budgets. More sophisticated features were added in later printings of higher denominations.
