Banco La Providencia was one of several private Peruvian banks authorized to issue currency under the 1877 banking law, a brief window of competitive note-issuance that collapsed almost entirely when the War of the Pacific (1879–1884) devastated the country's financial institutions. Most private bank notes from this period were either repudiated, withdrawn, or simply lost during the wartime disruption, which accounts for the extreme scarcity of surviving high-denomination examples from any issuer in this series.
The American Bank Note Company's Lima-destined commissions from the 1870s are sometimes conflated with contemporaneous issues from neighboring republics — the firm ran similar plate styles across multiple South American clients simultaneously.
