Issued in 2001 to mark the tenth anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence from the Soviet Union, this coin belongs to a broader commemorative program through which the Central Bank began establishing a numismatic identity for the young republic during its first decade. The Tashkent clock tower itself was built during the Soviet period and became one of the city's most recognizable landmarks — an irony not lost on collectors that it anchors an independence anniversary issue.
