Issued to mark the 560th anniversary of Alisher Navoi's birth, this coin commemorates the Timurid-era poet whose Chagatai-language works were central to Uzbekistan's post-Soviet cultural identity project. The newly independent state leaned heavily on Navoi as a founding figure of Uzbek literary heritage — his image had appeared on the 200 soʻm banknote introduced just years earlier.
Struck in the same year Uzbekistan was still tightening currency controls following the som's troubled first decade, collector-issue silver had a limited domestic market.
