Issued to commemorate Pope Paul VI's visit to Uganda in July 1969 — the first papal visit to Africa in history. The trip carried considerable political weight: Paul VI canonized the twenty-two Ugandan Martyrs at a ceremony in Namugongo, formalizing a cause that had been building since the executions ordered by Kabaka Mwanga II in 1885 and 1886.
Struck in a limited quantity for a country that had only gained independence seven years prior, these were prestige pieces rather than circulating currency. Idi Amin's coup came less than two years after issue.
