Kenya's first gold coinage was issued in 1966 to mark the third anniversary of independence, with this denomination among a small series produced in extremely limited quantities for collectors and diplomatic presentation rather than circulation. Kenyatta, then serving as the country's first president, had led KANU to victory in the 1963 elections after spending most of the preceding decade detained or restricted by British colonial authorities — including nearly nine years following his conviction at the controversial Kapenguria trial in 1953.
The KM#7 issue is rarely encountered outside of original packaging.
