| Obverse description | The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Tanzania in high relief at the centre, comprising an oval shield quartered with a torch, spear and axe motifs, and wavy lines symbolising the sea, supported by a male figure to the left and a female figure to the right, both rendered in classical style. A scroll at the base bears the national motto in Latin characters: UHURU NA UMOJA (Freedom and Unity). The legend TANZANIA arcs along the upper field, and the denomination 100 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower field. |

Tanzania's lion-themed collector issues of this period were produced almost entirely for the European numismatic market, with virtually no distribution within Tanzania itself. The Bank of Tanzania licensed production to foreign minting contractors, a common arrangement among sub-Saharan central banks seeking hard currency revenue without the overhead of domestic commemorative infrastructure.
