Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Tanzania in high relief at the centre, comprising an oval shield quartered with a torch, spear and axe motifs, and wavy lines symbolising the sea, supported by a male figure to the left and a female figure to the right, both rendered in classical style. A scroll at the base bears the national motto in Latin characters: UHURU NA UMOJA (Freedom and Unity). The legend TANZANIA arcs along the upper field, and the denomination 100 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower field.
