Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Tanzania in the central field, depicting a vertically oriented shield supported by two human figures — a man to the left and a woman to the right — each standing on a base of stylized vegetation. The shield is divided into quadrants incorporating a torch, crossed axe and hoe, mountain, and wavy lines representing water; a ribbon below bears the national motto 'UHURU NA UMOJA' (Freedom and Unity). The legend 'TANZANIA' arcs along the upper periphery in bold Latin lettering, while the denomination '100 SHILLINGS' appears along the lower border.

Additional information

Tanzania issued this piece in 2017, twenty years after Diana's death in the Paris underpass crash of August 31, 1997. The Bank of Tanzania has no historical connection to Diana or the British royal family — this is purely a commemorative licensing product, one of dozens issued by various African monetary authorities during the anniversary year through third-party minting arrangements.
