Somalia's gold bullion elephant series occupies an unusual position in modern bullion coinage: issued under the authority of the Central Bank of Somalia, the coins are produced by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich and distributed primarily through European dealers, making them functionally a German-minted product carrying African sovereign authority. The arrangement is entirely legal and not uncommon for smaller states, but it means these coins have virtually no connection to Somalia's domestic economy or monetary system.

The series gained a dedicated following among European stackers partly because the reverse design changes annually, a strategy borrowed directly from the Chinese Panda series.
