Uganda's 100 Shilling coin underwent several compositional changes through the 1990s and early 2000s as the country worked to stabilize its currency following decades of economic mismanagement under Idi Amin and Milton Obote. The nickel-plated steel version replaced earlier cupro-nickel issues as a cost-reduction measure — a pattern common across East African monetary unions during this period.
The dog depicted belongs to a short-lived commemorative animal series. Schön's E144.1 designation distinguishes this nickel-plated steel variant from a near-identical brass-plated issue struck the same year.
